THE COUNT DOWN TO SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY ON!

The weeks are flying and we are almost to end of the school year! The GLATs and IOWAs are behind us and we await those results in September. It’s also graduation season! The Class of 2024, our outgoing Grade 6 students, and two of our ION students are off to new adventures. Hats off to their teachers, especially their homeroom teacher, Mr. Davis, Ms. Dash (ION), and our Director, Ms. Lisa, who has helped to make this an unforgettable year for our seniors! To our Parents, thank you for raising such amazing young men and women and lending them to us for a season! They are wonderful ambassadors of The Meridian School and we are so proud of them!

On another note, one of our graduates and our nominee for the Primary Student of the Year, Miss Jules Carey, placed 21st out of 125 nominees in the Bahamas Primary Student of the Year Awards held on June 1st.  As a semifinalist, Jules received a laptop and a $3,000 scholarship along with a trophy. We congratulate Jules on her latest accomplishment! Jules is the daughter of Amilcar and Jessica Carey.

  • June 7 - Labour Day Holiday! School will reopen on Monday, June 10.

  • Friday, June 14 is Dollars for Duds (First Fridays!). Students can come dressed in their own clothes for $2. Accounts will be charged.

  • Awards Day - June 19th at 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at New Providence Community Church (NPCC). Students from Nursery to Grade 5 and ION should be in attendance for Awards Day in their formal school uniform and school shoes. There will be no school on this day. We kindly ask that families arrive no later than 3:45 p.m. for a prompt 4 p.m. start.

  • Graduation Day - June 19th at 6:30 p.m. at NPCC. The graduating class will take their final walk to receive their diplomas and awards.

  • June 20 - Regular School Day and Class Parties.

  • June 21 - School Closes Half Day at 12 p.m. for summer break! Final Report Cards are issued that afternoon. School reopens Monday, September 2.

  • June 24 - July 26 - Meridian’s Summer Splash - This exciting summer camp is an explosion of fun themes and activities galore! Please see the flier for more details.

  • June 24 - July 12 - Academic Summer School - Academic Summer School is a great way for students needing enrichment, reinforcement to avoid “summer brain”, or to ease the transition to school if this is their first time joining us for the new school year. Students attending the Academic Summer School have the option of joining the Meridian Summer Splash camp after their morning sessions or leaving midday.

  • Summer Reading Activities - “Summer slide, which is the loss of academic skills that occurs when school is not in session, is attributed largely to the lack of reading. This is of critical importance as the effects of the summer slide are cumulative. Researchers estimate that by the time a struggling reader reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two-year lag in reading achievement,” according to a report from Scholastic.com. Before we close for the summer, I will send out a recommended reading list for all ages that should help keep the synapses firing.
