October Newsletter
Wow! What a wonderful start back to yet another exciting school year. All our students have returned to us with renewed energy, enthusiasm and passion for school. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful bunch of children that motivate and stimulate us every day. This truly is a wonderful place to be!
September was a very busy month for us here at The Meridian School and October is sure to be the same. As I sit here, writing this newsletter, I can hear the voices of our Grades 2-6 students in their choir lesson. It appears Christmas Carols are already in progress and are sounding wonderful. It will not be long until our annual Christmas Production is upon us and it is sure to be a truly magnificent evening…..more information to follow.
We would like to thank all of you who attended our Open forum. It was so nice to see so many familiar faces and meet those new to our Meridian family. I think we would all agree the meetings were very productive and we all learnt something new about our child's class. Thank you for all your positive feedback. Your opinions / concerns are vital to the development and enhancement of our growing school.
For those of you that did not attend, please speak with your child's teacher for information regarding the meeting. I have also listed a few points below that were a common theme school wide:-
" Please label ALL of your children's belongings.
" ALL students should wear correct uniform. Please see our uniform policy on our website for more information.
" ALL students (with exception of Nursery) should wear running shoes on swim days and bring flip flops to change into. This will help prevent toe stubs in the playground!
" Please, please, please, absolutely NO parking in the driveway during drop off and pick up hours! If you need to speak with your child's teacher, please park in the lot across the street.
" Please make sure ALL Primary students arrive to school on time. (Year 1-6) Tardiness will not be tolerated!. For every three (3) lates, the child will now receive one (1) absence on their report cards.
" In the Primary Grades it was noted that parents were collecting children before the end of school, and/or waiting outside the classroom prior to the lesson finishing. This is causing a distraction to both the students and the teachers, who work right up until 3:15. Please refrain from going to your child's class until the end of school bell has rung. Please report to the Welcome Center if you need to collect your child early! |

This month sees yet more exciting events taking place.
On Monday 3rd October, The Meridian School P.T.A. held their general elections. Those interested running for new officers attended. The new officer's are as follows
President - Jennifer Saunders
Deputy President - Tanya Foster
Secretary - Hilary Hall
We are still seeking a new Treasurer. If you would be interested in fulfilling this position please contact the school.
We would also like to say a BIG HUGE THANK YOU to the previous P.T.A. members. We are extremely grateful to all of you for your time and dedication to our school.
On Friday 7th, Ms. Tangerine's class (Year 1) will be performing 'Pigs Aplenty Pigs Galore' during our Friday assembly. Parents of these students are invited to come along and support their child's class. The assembly will take place at 9.30a.m. in the music room. Like wise, the students in Year 2 will be presenting their class assembly on Friday 21st October…and I have been told, at this moment, the theme is a surprise!!!!!!! We await something very special!
Discovery Day this year will be celebrated on Friday 14th October. This is a public holiday and school will be closed on this day.
School will also close on Friday 21st October for Fall break and will reopen on Monday 31st. Mid-Term Progress Report cards will go home for those students in Years 1-6.
School will be open on October 23rd-28th for Day Care. More information regarding this can be found in the Welcome Center.
This month we also introduce our 'Dollars for Duds Day' which will take place on the first Friday of every month. On these days, the children will be able to come to school wearing their own clothes in exchange for a $2.00 donation. This donation should be made to the child's class teacher. These monies will go towards buying additional resources for our classes, including books for the library. As most of you are aware, this Friday, 7th October is Lee National Denim Day. Millions of people all around the world wear denim in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Our school has been intimately affected by this potentially deadly disease and we have decided to support this initiative.
As this is our first 'Dollars for Duds Day' our students are encouraged to come to school dressed in denim bottoms and pink (or white for boys) shirts. The money collected will be donated to The National Breast Cancer Awareness Initiative Fund of The Cancer Society of The Bahamas and the Sister Cancer Support Group.
If you haven't already written down your e-mail address with your child's class teacher, please do so as soon as possible. It is important that we rebuild our database quickly so that we can send important messages and newsletters to you and your family via e-mail. For those students in Rising 5s and higher we need these e-mails in order to receive MyCalvert! passwords for your child.
Please visit our website www.unicorn-village.com regularly for newsletters, P.T.A. information and events and photos of activities taking place around the school.
Thank you for your continued support. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding your child's education and well being.
Have a wonderful Fall break.
