MAY NEWSLETTER

Newsletter May 2006

This month is a busy one at The Meridian School as we fast approach the end of yet another successful school year. We are delighted to see so many of you returning next year and can proudly say that as we enter our fourth year of Primary school, our classes are now full from Nursery through Grade Four. This is quite an achievement in such a small amount of time and we are eternally grateful to you and your families that have continued to support and promote all the wonderful things that happen here. Without you and your kind words and daily encouragement, this school would not be such an exciting, creative and energetic place to be!

As May gets underway there are a few important dates for your diary…..

This coming Friday, the 5 th , sees our ever so famous ‘Dollar for Duds Day'. Children may come dressed in their own clothes for a donation of $1. We ask that the children dress modestly and PLEASE leave the heelies at home!

During the week of May 8 th -12 th our Grade 3 & 6 children will be sitting the National Grade Level Assessment Test Examinations ( GLAT ). A letter will be sent home this week for parents of these children. We have every confidence in the capabilities of our students and wish them luck.

Our annual IOWA Examinations will be taken during May 29-June 1 st by all children in Grades 1-6. These are standardized tests that we bring in from the U.S. to test the children in their overall performance in Languages Arts, Math, and Science. The tests are sent to the U.S. for marking and will be returned to us ready to go home with the end of year report cards. More information regarding the IOWA 's will follow shortly.

We have been trying desperately to organize the ‘My Calvert' portion of the Calvert curriculum so that you and your child can access the school's internet based enrichment and instruction program that supplements and supports the work being covered in class. The Calvert faculty has been having difficulties with processing the e-mail addresses and personal identification passwords for every child. In order to speed up the process please e-mail your personal email address to ngibson@calvertservices.org stating your child's school, name and Grade level.

As you will have seen by now our school P.T.A. are selling a wide array of Meridian items that are personalized with our logo. The ‘School Spirit Store' is open on Friday mornings from 8-9a.m. for a wide range of hats, caps, bags, towels, sweatshirts, and raincoats. Please support our school by supporting our P.T.A on their new endeavor.

On June 14 th we will hold our 2 nd Awards Ceremony for all students from Nursery – Grade 6. At this event children will be awarded for their specific contribution to their class, their academic achievements, and overall contribution to our school. There will also be the prestigious Directors Award and Student of The Year Award for two very priviledged and hardworking students. The ceremony will take place at The Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino at 6.30p.m. We would love to see you all there and join with you as the achievements of your special children are celebrated.

Following the awards ceremony, on Friday June 16 th we will host our 2 nd Graduation Ball in honour of our Grade 6 students that will be leaving the school this year. We anticipate a night of fun, laughter, live music, prizes, and let's not forget the few tears that will be thrown in as well!!! The event will be held at The Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino Ballroom at 7p.m. Tickets will go on sale from May 15 th at a cost of $50. Please note that this is a family event and not a drop-off service!

Finally, I would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Lisa McCartney on receiving the “Entrepreneur of the Year Award” , awarded to her by The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce. Lisa was awarded this special honor due to her hard work, dedication, and commitment to the students, staff, and families of The Meridian School. On behalf of all the staff I would like to say how proud we are of her and how happy we are to work with such a caring, inspiring, and wonderful individual that leads and motivates us daily. Congratulations Lisa on a job well done, and an award well deserved!

As always my door is open to you should you have any questions or concerns relating to your child's experience with us. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
