The Meridian School Homework Policy
The purpose of homework at The Meridian School is to
- Encourage students to take pride in their work.
- Practice skills and methods of work learned in school.
- Encourage students to organize themselves and their time effectively.
- Establish the habit of getting work in on time.
- Check student understanding of information and concepts learned in class.
- Give time to learning facts.
- Aid memory through repetition.
- Extend learning through additional reading.
- Manage particular demands such as study for tests.
Time spent on homework varies between each Grade level.
This is an approximate guide as to the amount of time students should dedicate to their homework.
Grade 1 - 15 minutes Grade 3 - 35 minutes Grade 5 - 45 - 60 minutes
Grade 2 - 25 minutes Grade 4 - 45 minutes Grade 6 - 45 - 60 minutes
We will ensure that
Homework is set regularly and varies in subject and content.
Homework is monitored, marked, and assessed according to teacher expectations.
Homework diaries are checked and signed daily and uncompleted assignments finished during break.
Assistance is given to those not understanding the content set, prior to work going home.
Parents are informed via the diary if homework is not completed.
The students must ensure that
Homework is written clearly and correctly in homework diaries daily.
Homework is completed to the best of their abilities.
Homework is handed in to the class teacher first thing in the morning.
Homework is clearly labeled with name, date, subject heading, and page numbers.
We encourage parents to
Check homework diaries nightly and sign once assignments are checked and completed.
Provide a quiet environment for their child to complete their homework in.
Give help where necessary, within reason.
Inform the teacher of any reason that may have prevented their child from completing their homework.
Failure of a student to complete homework on a regular basis will be dealt with by the class teacher and head teacher. Parents will be involved if the problem persists.
